For dewetting experiments on alumina (sapphire), we use a dedicated tube-furnace system heated with Kanthal Super elements. The elements heat an alumina tube that contains a separate sapphire tube, inside which the samples are loaded for thermal dewetting. The atmosphere in the sapphire tube is carefully controlled—particularly the oxygen partial pressure—using pre-mixed gas cylinders and feedback from a zirconia oxygen sensor.
